Tides & Trails

A project between sea, running, mountains, and life aboard.

Tides & Trails is first and foremost a project about running, about the outings, the experiences, and the places that appear along the way. And about trying to pass some of that onward, that running is more than training alone. At the same time it is also about the road back after injury, and about rebuilding something that has taken time. Marthine is the frame around all of it, home, base, and transport between harbours, mountains, and new starting points. Here you can follow both the work on the boat, daily life on board, the road south towards Portugal, back to Horta, and further north again, but with running as the red thread through the whole project. Right now, much of it is about making the boat safe, liveable, and ready enough for longer passages. If everything falls into place, the course turns south in late July. If not, the winter will be spent in Norway and departure moves to the spring.

Preparation in Melsomvik

Right now I live on board in Melsomvik, work, train, and try to get a little done every day. There is a lot that has to be dealt with, but I am not in a rush to get everything done at once. I would rather have things done properly than quickly. Marthine has to become ready for the journey and also work as a good place to live while that happens.

In progress Engine room, cooling box, rig, deck, and daily life on board
Next step The Færder Race as the first test sail, then south towards Portugal once the boat and the weather window are ready

Overview

Here you will find the latest updates from the journey, the running, the boat life, and the everyday life around the project.

Journey

The background, the present phase, and the bigger chapters in the right order.

Active phase

Right now: Melsomvik, wrenching, and steady progress

This is the phase where the project is being built from the bottom up. I live on board, go to work, train, and use my free time to make the boat safer, simpler, and more livable. Most of it is about technical systems and groundwork right now, not big sailing legs.

Running & mountains

The latest activity from Strava, the zero point in Horta, and the outings that deserve a little more room.

Run

Easy run with a good hill effort, Melsomvik

Some outings have only one job: keeping the rhythm going while the rest of the project is being built. But it is nice to throw in a few harder efforts now and then :)

Boat life

Everything practical that decides whether the boat actually works as a home and a long-distance base.

Maintenance

A quiet day on deck

Frayed rope ends finally got a proper fix :)

Journal

Short notes on body, pace, calm, frustration, and life between harbour and height.

A small technical setback

Things have been quiet on the website and development side for a while. Not because the project has stopped, but because I got a brutal reminder of how important backups actually are.
